03-When TO Use Kubernetes
Understand what Docker is, why it exists, and how it solves the 'it works on my machine' problem with containerization.
Kubernetes shines in specific contexts. Use it when:
✅ 1. You Have Multiple Microservices (5+)
Once you cross ~5 independently deployable services that need to talk to each other, coordinate, and scale individually — K8s becomes the natural home.
✅ 2. You Need High Availability
If downtime costs you money or reputation, K8s’s multi-replica deployments, rolling updates, and self-healing give you the infrastructure to achieve 99.9%+ uptime.
✅ 3. Your Traffic Is Unpredictable
E-commerce peaks, viral moments, batch jobs, scheduled workloads — if your load spikes unpredictably, HPA + Cluster Autoscaler means you only pay for what you use.
✅ 4. You Have Multiple Teams / Services
K8s Namespaces give each team their own isolated environment within a shared cluster. RBAC (Role-Based Access Control) controls who can touch what.
✅ 5. You Deploy Frequently
If you ship multiple times a day, rolling deployments and canary releases (sending 5% of traffic to a new version before full rollout) make CI/CD safe at scale.
✅ 6. You’re Running in Multiple Environments
Dev → Staging → Production. Kubernetes manifests (YAML files) are environment-agnostic — the same config works everywhere, with only values changing (via ConfigMaps/Secrets).
✅ 7. You Need Multi-Cloud or Hybrid Cloud
K8s runs the same everywhere — AWS EKS, Google GKE, Azure AKS, on-prem, bare metal. Avoid cloud vendor lock-in for your application layer.
✅ 8. You’re Running Stateful Workloads with Complexity
Databases, message queues, and distributed systems can run on K8s using StatefulSets and Persistent Volumes, with ordered, stable Pod identities.
When NOT TO Use Kubernetes
Kubernetes is powerful but not always the right tool. Be honest about these:
❌ 1. You Have a Small, Simple Application
If you’re running a monolith or 2–3 services, K8s is massive overkill. A single server, a VM, or a simple PaaS (Heroku, Railway, Render) will serve you better and cost far less in operational complexity.
Rule of thumb: If you can run it comfortably on one machine, you probably don’t need K8s.
❌ 2. Your Team Is Small (< 5 engineers)
K8s has a steep learning curve. A 3-person startup spending 30% of their engineering time on cluster management instead of product features is burning runway. Use managed platforms until you outgrow them.
❌ 3. You Don’t Have DevOps/Platform Engineering Expertise
Running K8s well requires knowledge of: networking, storage, security, RBAC, monitoring, logging, certificate management, and more. Without dedicated expertise, you’ll have a false sense of security — the cluster runs, but poorly.
❌ 4. Your App Is Stateless and Traffic Is Predictable
A simple CRUD API behind a load balancer, with stable traffic? A managed container service (AWS ECS, Google Cloud Run, Azure Container Apps) handles this with 1/10th the complexity.
❌ 5. Cost Is a Primary Concern (at Small Scale)
A minimal K8s cluster (even managed) costs ~$70-200/month before your workloads. At small scale, this overhead may exceed your actual workload cost.
❌ 6. You Need Extremely Fast Time-to-Market
Initial K8s setup — cluster, namespaces, RBAC, ingress, TLS, monitoring, logging — takes weeks. If you’re a startup trying to validate a product idea in 2 weeks, skip K8s.
❌ 7. Serverless Fits Your Use Case Better
If your workloads are event-driven, infrequent, or highly variable (a webhook handler, an image processor), serverless (AWS Lambda, Google Cloud Functions) is simpler and cheaper.
❌ 8. You’re Running Batch Jobs Without Long-Running Services
For pure batch processing pipelines, tools like Apache Airflow, Prefect, or cloud-native batch services are often better fits than K8s Jobs.
